SURYA’S MILES FOR MEALS PROGRAM RAISES $29,000 FUNDS FOR IMPOVERISHED YOUTH11.02.12

CALHOUN, Ga. — Nov. 12, 2012 —Home accessory solutions brand Surya, recently raised money for the life-changing Akshaya Patra organization through its own “Miles for Meals” program. The world’s largest NGO-run meal program, the charity serves over 1.3 million children in rural India freshly prepared, nutritious meals every day. For many of them, the Akshaya Patra provided lunch might be their only complete meal for the day. This work also acts as a powerful incentive for parents to keep their children in school.

Surya became involved with the organization earlier in 2012, donating $250,000 – helping to provide thousands of children with healthy meals for an entire year. Surya President, Satya Tiwari decided to use an upcoming local race to further this worthwhile cause. He and a team of Surya employees, all running in the Atlanta AllState Half-Marathon enlisted the help of family, friends, customers and the local community in raising donations for their program – which they’ve dubbed “Miles for Meals.” The group was able to raise over $29,000 – exceeding their initial goal by more than $4,000. These valuable donations will in turn, help the organization to feed 1,941 children over the coming year.

“I want to personally thank all of those who donated their time and money towards this amazing cause. Growing up in northern India, I saw the desperate need that still exists in so many communities for the healthy food and educational opportunities that can so easily be taken for granted,” says Tiwari.

The program continues its efforts and anyone interested in placing a donation or learning more about the work of Akshaya Patra is invited to get started on Surya’s Miles for Meals site: www.razoo.com/story/Suryamilesformeals

SURYA PARTNERS WITH ONE OF WORLD’S LARGEST NGO-RUN SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMS 6.27.12

June 27, 2012 (Calhoun, GA) — Surya has announced its partnership with the Akshaya Patra Foundation, one of the world’s largest NGO-run school feeding programs. Surya has made a five year commitment to help build this program of highest relevance for the deserving children in India by offering their time, expertise and financial support. Surya’s financial contribution will feed 3,333 students each year for the next five years.

Surya was founded in rural North India and is very conscious of the health and educational challenges in rural areas. Akshaya Patra’s mission that no child shall be deprived of education because of hunger had a special meaning for Satya Tiwari, President of Surya, who spent his childhood in a village outside of Banaras, India and continues to rely on weavers from these communities. “Surya is very committed to improving the welfare of communities it works with”, said Mr. Tiwari. “Access to quality education is critical for the sustenance of these communities and without adequate food, it is difficult for students to stay in school and learn. Surya wants to be part of that solution.”

“We are delighted to forge this partnership with Surya,” said Madhu Sridhar, President and CEO of Akshaya Patra USA. “As Akshaya Patra strives to become a role model for other NGOs, we look forward to engaging Surya and other strategic partners in meaningful ways so that Akshaya Patra can reach its next goal of feeding 5 million children by 2020. “

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a public-private partnership, currently serves mid day meals to over 1.3 million children daily in over 9,000 schools throughout 10 states of India. It costs Akshaya Patra only $15 to feed a child for an entire year. This meal gives these children an incentive to come to school, stay in school and provides them with the necessary nutrients they need to develop their cognitive abilities to focus on learning. In a short time, the foundation has grown to become the largest, and certainly most innovative, school lunch program in the world. Akshaya Patra is a great example of what can be accomplished when the public sector, private sector and the civic society collaborate-- a cost effective, scalable solution with high quality service delivery.

SURYA SUCCEEDS WITH PINTEREST 4.28.12

We wrote earlier this month suggesting that wholesalers and manufacturers could take advantage of Pinterest. Now we have an example for you. Surya, a manufacturer of area rugs and home accessories, launched some pretty awesome design boards on Pinterest last week. It didn’t take long before the company had 148 followers on Pinterest, while its “High Point 2012 Spring” board had 270 followers as of April 26.

Surya’s new pin boards on Pinterest are designed to interest potential shoppers. According to the company’s press release, “Surya’s Pinterest boards showcase latest trends in home decor to stimulate prospective shoppers’ imagination and drive traffic to Surya dealers.”

Surya targets designers and home décor shoppers by creating and sharing virtual pinboards on Pinterest, the highly visual social network that is all the rage these days.

Surya has 24 decor boards on Pinterest featuring its spring introductions, designer products and latest colors and trends. The company plans to update their boards regularly, which is recommended to keep shoppers’ interest.

“We have been creating mood boards for years in our catalog, but couldn’t find a simple tool to share digitally,” said Satya Tiwari, president, Surya. “Pinterest is what we were looking for all along, and we are thrilled to make our virtual pinboards easily accessible to Surya community.”

Surya has been expanding its social media presence under the SuryaSocial brand to connect with its customers. Surya posts daily on its Facebook page, which has over 32,400 fans. Sounds like a great plan for many wholesalers and manufacturers with products that are appealing to the eye and need only to be demonstrated.

The sessions are designed to provide retail salespeople with a detailed understanding of the company’s line along with tips about how to successfully sell rugs and other accessories to consumers.

“We are not just a product company,” said Tiwari. “We are a home décor marketing solutions and technology company. A big part of our mission is providing our retail partners with solutions that will help them grow their business.”

During market, Surya will introduce a number of new products in all of its key categories – rugs, wall art, pillows, poufs and throws. The introductions will cover a range of design themes, said Tiwari.
